“Since men first began using enclosures… The [notion of] boundary-surface has been continually transformed, perceptively or imperceptivily. Its most recent transformation is perhaps that of the interface… What used to be a substance’s boundary line, its “terminal,” now, becomes an access route concealed in the most imperceptible entity Paul Virilio 1987

Geometrically, a surface is a two dimensional form that can exist in two dimensions (planar surface) or three dimension (non planar surface). It has zero thickness and always contains both U and V directions. The true definition of a surface makes it impossible o exist in physical space; it exists only in virtual space. A surface is not a mesh
From an abstract stand point a surface is something that is infinite in size; it can grow and can regenerate / heal itself (i.e. Skin). It can be used to create boundaries to contain objects and / or space. A surface can be the life source for other geometric forms to live and grow.

The point of interaction, threshold where the physical meets physical to interact. Or it could be non-physical such as idea of an image, ie how someone might portray themselves. Either way surface is threshold.
